SALAMANCA

Salamanca – where the stones speak Latin and the wine listens to your secrets.

Walking into Salamanca feels like stepping into a time machine operated by a drunken 16th-century architect. Everything here is made from golden sandstone that glows in the sun as if it’s just been polished with olive oil.

First rule of Salamanca: don’t look up at the buildings for too long, or you’ll trip over the cobblestones. Second rule: hunt for the hidden frog. Yes, there’s a frog carved into the façade of the university – legend has it that if you find it without help, you’ll graduate. If you’re like me, you’ll spend half an hour staring at the stonework until some tourist points it out: “Here, there it is, blind chicken.” I’m getting old – my eyesight isn’t what it used to be.

The University of Salamanca is the oldest in Spain (1134!), which means students here were already getting drunk centuries before it was cool. Even today, people come from all over the world – some for the studies, most for the tapas that come free with every beer.

Plaza Mayor is the beating heart of the city – a square so beautiful you could put it on your Tinder profile and it would get more matches than you. Everyone gathers here: from old ladies with pink shopping trolleys to students pretending to read while actually just chasing Wi-Fi.

And since Salamanca’s soul is that of a student city, the nightlife is no joke. When locals say “let’s go out,” they mean you’ll still be dancing at four in the morning while someone explains why Cervantes is better than Shakespeare.

But Salamanca isn’t just wine and stone. Here you’ll find two cathedrals – the old and the new – because the Spanish decided one simply wasn’t enough. The new one is from the 18th century, the old one from the 12th, and despite its name, the “old” one is still more photogenic than most Instagram models.

In short: Salamanca is a place where history sits on your shoulders, wine makes you embrace it, and when you leave, you’ll feel like you’ve become something… even if it’s just a master of the siesta.
