CAMINO DEL NORTE 2018

SPEEDY GONZALES

You know that feeling when you have to work on vacation? Someone joked about stealing my shoes because I’m so fast, and Simone wants my legs.

I don’t know anymore whether everyone on Camino is so damn slow or am I really as fast as they say I am.

It is true, though, that my middle name has been Speed since I was ten. And since sports and a proper way of eating are my business, I can take advantage of that on this Path. People ask me what kind of a morning serum makes me so chirpy and nimble. I told them it was a very simple sequence: EAT – WALK – SLEEP – REPEAT. Surely enough that didn’t impress anyone – old habits die hard. But Camino is all about spending your days differently.

My legs are bust, but I can still “dance” in the evening and have fun my way. Frankly, walking rests me up and fills me with energy – if I start the day properly and continue it that way, of course.

If people took to heart that breakfast is the king, lunch is the gentleman, and dinner is the beggar, our bodies would run optimally, and people would enjoy walking more without meeting their maker. But people do it backwards.

People have forgotten that food is that thing that gives you energy or takes it away.

You don’t need much food before bed – your body is going to rest. Well, if you’re not planning on having sex all night, that is. And on Camino, you do it quickly, since there’s always company in your room, but more about it some other time. Body needs to rest after all that exertion, not digest your evening chow. No wonder you wake up tired and underslept.

Since I drink around five liters of water during the day, I also have random beer, since all that liquid washes electrolytes away and those fuckers are quite important for your body. Muscles relax, which means a good night’s sleep. Beer is the best drink for regeneration. Even our ultra-marathon runner Dušan Mravlje knows that. He alternates between water and beer. Juices are a big no-no, because they tend to dehydrate you. I don’t dare to drink more than three coffees a day, since a cup of joe also drains the water, and it’s not that good for your heart either. And one Coke a day is also enough sugar. So: beer! Okay? And yeah, I sometimes eat paste for breakfast.

So, this was a post about food for…
